Tech Tent and Community Building Success
This past weekend we had our first Tech Tent at the Tigard/Bull Mountain Farmers Market. The response was positive and we had many people come by to ask what Nerds Abroad is all about. We also were able to showcase the mission and vision for the organization with this kickoff event.
In addition to talking about our organization, here are the technology services we provided this weekend:
- 2 security audits and anti-virus/malware prevention steps.
- 1 iPad speed-optimization.
- 1 Fit-bit setup
- About $300 of FREE services provided
- 2 prospective volunteers!
- Over 300 impressions from the regular weekly market traffic.
- 35 business cards given to people who need a techie-to-talk-to!
Part of our steps moving forward are stronger communication and marketing efforts with the Farmers Market to advertise our services well in advance. Many visitors said they had wished they brought their technology with them that day!
What comes next?
When we look at where we want to go, we talked about where we will start. Earlier, we had already determined that Nerds Abroad was going to be based within communities. The goal is to empower individuals in their community to take a leadership role in regards to technology, ever expanding a global knowledge base. Farmers Markets are the perfect launching point to build such a community. Almost every town in America has a market, these bring in individuals from every possible age and background. It is a place where a community develops long-term relationships. And, it is exactly where we want our members to be when reaching out to their communities.
As we continue with these Tech Tents we are looking to have local students host and/or volunteer at these events. This provides an excellent learning and experience building opportunity for them. They will build key skills in customer service, speaking, and problem solving, while establishing themselves as a cornerstone for their community. We also want to keep the Tech Tent flexible, although it is starting with a focus on tech support and advice, we will start showcasing other education initiatives and programs: such as coding, 3D design/printing, web design, and more.
This past weekend was the first small step on a grand and exciting journey. We look forward to seeing you at our next Tech Tent Weekend!
