One thing that many nerds share a common love for are movies that begin with the word “Star.” Last night, I watched one starting the crew of the USS Enterprise traveling back to the year 2063 to stop the Borg from assimilating the human race. In one scene, Captain Picard describes the economy of the future – a future where currency has no meaning and humanity lives life as one giant nonprofit for the good of the universe. Lily stares back at him speechless and wonders how that even is possible. Until the utopian future arrives (or complete assimilation into the collective), nonprofits will need to rely on the donations and support of the public to accomplish their missions.

At Nerds Abroad, we value the trust and reputation we cultivate with our donors, community, and those we serve. As such, we desire to be proactive with the resources given to us and be transparent with our stewardship. In addition to filing our annual Form 990 (for the next few years we will only need to file the e-postcard) and our Form CT-12, our goals are to give all of our donors an annual giving statement in January or February following our December year-end (as a registered 501c(3) organization, donations may be deductible on your income tax return); publish an annual report, summarizing our stewardship and year highlights; and actively update public domain information to provide a high level of transparency and accountability.

To accomplish these goals we need your help. Some things that you can do to assist us are as follows:

1. Keep us updated with your contact info. We are only able to serve because of your support and help and we want to be able to update you on what is happening with Nerds Abroad.
2. Volunteering your skills! Specifically, I’m calling out to those who are good with words and graphic design. I’m good with numbers and making sure debits and credits match, but helping translate so much information into colorful words and visuals is a skill I do not have. Also, we would love help from people who have experience writing grants!
3. Support us financially with automated monthly donations. Any and all donations are always appreciated, but we would love to partner with you on a monthly basis and count on your support. By having recurring monthly donations, you will allow us to budget and plan projects for the future.
